Day 2: Saturday 20 May 2000
Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Whittier. The route between Anchorage and Whittier is very scenic, and the rail schedule works well for passengers boarding cruise ships in Whittier. After traveling through Anchorage you will descend through the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. This area, also commonly known as Potter's Marsh, is a good place to spot migratory birds, water fowl and moose. Your trip continues along the Turnagain Arm, a body of water featuring the world's second highest tides at over 30 feet. Beluga whales can often be seen following salmon on the incoming tide, and Dall sheep frequent rocky mountain sides. After passing Girdwood and Portage Glacier you will travel through a two mile tunnel before reaching Whittier.
The City of Whittier was incorporated in 1969. Today, less than 300 people reside in the town supporting the Alaska State Ferry, the Alaska Railroad, freight barge, commercial fishing, the Small Boat Harbor, recreation and tourism with an annual visiting population of over 700,000.
Spend the day getting up close and personal with some of Alaska's gigantic tidewater glaciers and vibrant marine wildlife! Professional narration is provided by US Forest Service Rangers or provided by trained and professional Captain and Crew on every cruise. The 26 Glacier Cruise operates daily May 11 through September 15, 2013 and takes you through the calm, protected waters of Prince William Sound aboard the largest, fastest and most luxurious catamaran in Alaska -- the Klondike Express.
The Klondike Express trying to cut through the sheets of ice but only left a gash and had to back off and take another route.
Anchorage Alaska - Taken over a number of days
JB Gottstein & Company had provided groceries and other staple goods to Alaska since 1915. in fact it’s the oldest company in Anchorage. In 1949, Barney Gottstein, just out of school, took over the management of the company which his father had started, and developed it into the largest wholesale grocery distribution center in the state.
Barney Gottstein and Larry Carr began acquiring and developing real estate together, an though their separate businesses flourished, it was inevitable that the two business associates would eventually merged their companies as they did in 1974 |
“Racing in the Footsteps of a Legend” was sculpted by Jacque and Mary
Regat in 1989 based on a concept by Bill Devine and dedicated to the memory of David Green who was a famous furrier in Anchorage. His store, David Green Master Furrier, is just down the street. The statute is dedicated to all dog mushers and their heroic dogs. It commemorates Fur Roundezvous, our winter celebration in Anchorage, at which time the World Sled Dog Race is held and the Iditarod Dog Sled Race, which is held in February." |
Tour of airfields around Anchorage with Mike Presley but the weather stopped any chance of going flying.
Day 7: Thursday 25 May 2000
After a wrestles night not being able to settle into a deep sleep I was up well before the wake-up call and was already prepared for the taxi to take me to the airport for the retun trip home.
