Brief history of Joseph Kony and the civil wars in Northern Uganda 1986 to 2010.
The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has been active since 1986, making it one of Africa’s oldest, most violent, and persistent armed groups. The LRA was formed in northern Uganda to fight against the Government of Uganda, and operated there from 1986 to 2006. At the height of the conflict, nearly two million people in northern Uganda were displaced. The vast majority of the LRA fighters came from the northern districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Pader.

Children 10 years old are taught to kill, often beginning with their own families. Others are killed and a child is let to live and then the child is commanded to kill in order to stay alive. If children do escape, they will never be the same again.
Boys are turned into ruthless killers who no longer feel, but are numbed within, and their souls have become seared by the atrocities they have seen and in which they have forced to participate. |
Lira district has become progressively affected by the LRA conflict in Northern Uganda since 2002. The increased movement of rebels along the northern border has made the district a clear target of attacks, abductions and looting.
This first led to a massive displacement of people into Lira municipality in May 2003. By the end of the same year, many of the displaced people moved into rural camps which were formed as the need for protection increased throughout the district. |
A 2006 study funded by UNICEF estimated that at least 66,000 children and youth had been abducted by the LRA between 1986 and 2005.
Under increasing pressure, LRA’s leader Joseph Kony ordered the LRA to withdraw completely from Uganda in 2005 and 2006 and move west into the border region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR), and what would become the Republic of South Sudan. The LRA has continued to operate in this border region to date. |
